Updates and a World Record

There sure have been a lot of competitions going on lately!

We had athletes compete well at Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California on April 14-16.  Kansas Relays were at Kansas University April 20-23, and Drake Relays happened in Des Moines, Iowa April 28-30.

We have also been having discus and pole vault meets regularly here in Chula Vista on Thursdays.  Becky Breisch has thrown over 62m (the World A Standard) in the women's discus three times already this season!

Sean Furey and Tora Harris did very well at Mt. SAC.  Sean threw a personal record 81.62m to win the invitational/elite section of the men's javelin.  That is only 38 centimeters short of the World A Standard required to compete at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.  Tora placed second in the men's invitational/elite high jump with a World A Standard clearance of 2.31m (7'7")

At Drake, Russ Winger topped the field in the men's University/College discus throw with a toss of 61.40m (201'5").  Watch his interview hereJamie Nieto cleared 2.28m (7'5.75") for third place in the men's special high jump event.

On Saturday, May 7 at the Desert Challenge Games in Mesa, Arizona, Lex Gillette (our completely blind Paralympic athlete) competed very well.  Lex, already the American Record Holder in the long jump for completely blind athletes, broke his event's World Record!!  He leapt 6.73m on Saturday.  Results here (scroll down to event 12, Men 14+ Long Jump F11).  Awesome job, Lex!

Also on Saturday, Alice Schmidt ran her first 800m race of the season at the Occidental Oxy Invite.  She cruised to an easy victory in 2:01.94.
