The weekend of May 16-18, 2013
The Paralympic and able body track and field athletes both headed to the Grand Canyon State for competition.
The Paralympic competed at the Desert Challenge in Mesa, AZ and the able body athletes competed about 100 miles away at the Tucson Elite Invitational.
At the Desert Challenge in the 100m David Brown with guide Rolland Slade ran 11.83, Lex Gillette competing with guide runner Wes Williams ran 12.67, Josiah Jamison ran 12.00, and Blake Leeper ran 11.55. In the 200m Sabra Hawkes ran 33.91, Josiah Jamison ran 22.94, Blake Leeper ran 23.2. In the 400m Sabra Hawkes ran 1:16.86, Markeith Price ran 51.96, and Rob Brown ran 54.65.
In the field events Lex Gillete jumped 6.57m and Markeith Price jumped 6.46 which were both seasonal best in the long jump.
At the Tucson Elite which was a two day competition on Thursday and Saturday many seasonal bests were produced.
Kiani Profit had personal best in the Javelin of 41,.94 meters and shot put 12.33m. Shana Woods had a seasonal best in the shot put of 11.91m. Joe Kovacs moved into the top ten in the world with a seasonal best of 20.82m and Eric Werskey threw 19.81m showing his consistency as he has thrown over his previous personal best on a weekly basis. In the Javelin Olympians Craig Kinsley and Sean Furey opened their season throwing 74.75 and 73.15 meters. Long jumpers Tyron Stewart 7.99m, Ronald Taylor 7.98m, and Ronald Brookins had seasonal best of 7.69m. In the hammer throw Britney Henry threw 69.35m and Kristin Smith threw a seasonal best of 63.58m. Straight off a plane from her graduation from San Diego State Whitney Ashley threw 56.76m in the discus.

WOW!!!!!!!
The past week was a great one for the athletes at the OTC Chula Vista, outdoors kicked off with the first Diamond League competition of the year and some local competitions.
Resident athlete Brittney Reese jumped 7.25m to win the competition in Doha, Qatar and stamp her self as the favorite for the World Championships in Moscow, Russia. It is the furthest jump in the world in 15 years.
At the Azusa Pacific Last Chance Qualifier lone athlete Jeff Skiba opened his outdoor season jumping 2.04m. He finished second in the competition on a very warm day in Azusa, CA.
On Thursday and Friday multi-event athletes Kiani Profit the current outdoor US leader and Shana Woods the former HS record holder competed in the Claremont Multi. Kiani won the event scoring 5878 which was her second best score ever. Shana Woods finished third and scored 5334 points. The heptathlon which consist of the 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m on the first day and long jump, javelin and 800m on the second day is scored based on points for each event. Kiani's marks were (13.67,1.70, 11.07,24.02,5.71,40.97,2:09.60) and Shana's marks were (14.02,1.67,11.42,24.51,6.30,31.26,2:42.69) respectively.
On Weds in Guadeloupe, FWI a group of athletes Chris Benard TJ, April Sinkler TJ and Crystal Manning TJ competed in the Guadeloupe invitational. Chris finished second to former resident and current Florida student Will Claye in the invitational triple jump. Chris jumped 16.60m which is one of the top jumps in the US this outdoor season. In the women's invitational triple jump April Sinkler jumped 13.49m to finish with a seasonal best to finish fifth and Crystal Manning finished slightly behind her in 7th.
Last Saturday the track and field members competed at the Oxy Invitational in Eagle Rock, California. on the track Paralympic Athlete Katie Walker ran times of 29.36 in the 200m and 69.53 in the 400m. David Brown accompanied by guide runner Roland Slade ran a workman like 11.56 in the 100m and a great time of 23.15 in the 200m. Markeith Price ran a seasonal best and his second fastest time of 51.36 while Rob Brown ran a tremendous time of 54.39 as he continues to keep dropping his 400m times this year. In the hurdles Kiani Profit ran 13.55 and Shana Woods ran 13.90 as they prepared for the multi-event. In the men's hurdles Ron Brookins ran 13.64 to win and prepare himself for a big drop in time in his next race.
In the field Chula Vista Elite was all over the place. Winners in the field events were Joe Kovacs in the shot with a seasonal best of 20.65m, Tori Bowie in the long jump 6.46m, Tyron Stewart in the men's long jump 7.70m, Chris Benard with a short approach one jump win at 16.17m, and Crystal Manning jumping to the US outdoor lead in the women's TJ 13.86. Opening up her season after a little injury was Kristin Smith who threw 61.56m in the hammer throw. The Chula Vista athletes completed a sweep in both the mens and women's long jumps, for the women places 2 and 3 went to Shana Woods 6.09m and April Sinkler 6.05m. In the men's long jump it was Reindell Cole finishing second 7.59m, and Ronnie Taylor finishing third 7.57m. In the shot put Kiani threw 11.82m.

OTC CV World Series #4
OTC-CV Thursday World Series Meet
Thursday May 2nd, marked the beginning of the
OTC-CV World Series of meets. The weather was 85 degrees and the competition
was hot. In the pole vault Tori Pena who competes for Ireland set a seasonal
best and achieved the 8th best mark in the world jumping 4.45m. In
the men’s vault Nick Mossberg achieved the 10th best mark in the
world wining with a mark of 5.60m.
In the long jump it marked the season debut of resident
athlete Lex Gillette. Lex the reigning bronze medalist from the London
Paralympics competed head to head with the Olympic Long Jump Champion Greg
Rutherford. Lex produced a seasonal best mark of 6.65m. The action started in
the third round when resident long jumper Ronnie Taylor jumped 7.96m to PR. But
the Olympic champion responded with a jump of 8.06m. In the competition it was
also the season long jump debut for Markeith Price. He jumped 6.26m to place
right behind teammate Lex Gillette.

On the weekend of April 26-27 athletes from the OTC-CV were spread throughout the country.
Alice Schmidt competed and ran in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she took part in the 4 x 800 relays that was deemed the USA versus the world. He team finished third and Alice ran a 2:02 leg for her team. Its a great time for and early season performance.
In Des Moines, IA defending gold medal long jumper Brittney Reese continued her clutch performance ways by winning the long jump on her last attempt. Her jump of 6.94m won the competition by 2 cm and beat fellow American and Olympic Bronze medalist Janay Deloach-Soukup.
Most of the OTC-CV athletes competed here in San Diego at the UCSD Triton Invitational. Known as one of the best places in the world to throw the discus resident athlete Whitney Ashley used the great conditions to throw a life time best of 61.14m. It is currently a World Championship "B" standard throw and is only 86cm off the "A" standard needed for World Championship qualifying. It is also the third furthest throw in the United States this year.
Other athletes competing at the Triton Invite were Crystal Manning in the long jump, where she placed 2nd with a distance of 5.86. Crystal is the outdoor American leader in the triple jump with a jump of 13.84 which she accomplished at the Mt Sac Relays the weekend before.
Kiani Profit the American leader in the outdoor heptathlon at 5911 competed in the 200m (24.27), 100 hurdles (14.07), and high jump 1.68m as she gets ready on her assault of the 6000 point barrier and a World Championship "B" mark of 5950. Fellow heptathlete Shana Woods competed in the high jump 1.63 and shot put as she gets ready for her first heptathlon of the season. Paralympian Sabra Hawkes ran the 200m in 33.30.
In the hammer throw Britney Henry threw 65.56, Britney already has the fourth furthest throw in the US at 69.75 which is a world championship "B" mark.
For the men it was a battle between the fastest man in rugby Carlin Isles and accomplished sprinter Jerome Avery. Carlin ran 10.42 to out step Jerome who ran 10.52. In the 200m Jerome ran 21.47, followed by long jumper Reindell Cole in 22.91. A step behind Reindell Cole was two time London medalist Blake Leeper in a time of 23.30. David Brown with guide Roland Slade ran the 400m and finished with a time of 53.69 fellow teammate Rob Brown finished in 56.69 respectively.
It was double duty for Ron Brookins as he won the 110 hurdles in 13.66 and the long jump with a jump of 7.44m. He out jumped teammate and primary triple jumper Chris Benard who jumped 7.23m.
One of the highlights of the weekend was in the shot put for the men. Eric Werskey threw a life time best of 20.13. It is the first time Eric has broken 20 meters and it puts his performance as the 17th best in the world. Finishing just ahead of him in a seasonal best performance was training partner Joe Kovacs. Joe threw 20.28 which puts him 14th in the world.
The next competition for the OTC-CV athletes is at the Oxy Invitational in Eagle Rock, CA.
